This is a tribute to Professor Sir Roy Calne, a true pioneer of transplant surgery whose practices will go on saving lives for years to come.
Sir Roy performed the first successful liver transplant in Europe at Addenbrooke’s on 2 May 1968, and dedicated his life to turning seemingly impossible surgery into regular practice at Addenbrooke’s, where he established the kidney transplant service. In 2018, Sir Roy helped launch Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust’s appeal to run a state-of-the art liver perfusion machine which helps newly donated livers survive for longer and enables more donated organs to be suitable for transplantation.
Dr Mike More, Chair of CUH, said: “Sir Roy leaves behind a truly amazing legacy and many of our staff will remember him with fondness for his vision and genuine kindness. We will all miss him very much.”
All donations collected in memory of Sir Roy will be used to set up a new Research Fellowship in his name through Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust.
